Ata Board Of Management Hits The Red Centre

Trucks News No Comments »

The Board of Australia’s peak trucking industry body, the Australian Trucking Association, is meeting in Alice Springs today to get a different view of the industry and help celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Australian Road Transport Hall of Fame.

The Board will use the opportunity to get the views of a wide cross-section of the trucking industry.

“The Australian trucking industry is one of the most diverse in the world. The industry’s task in Sydney or Melbourne is vastly different to its role in outback Australia or the west,” ATA Chairman David Simon said.

“Outback Australia relies on the trucking industry to deliver the goods it needs every day, and the unique experiences of operators and drivers in the outback are a world away from how the industry operates in the eastern states.

“As the peak body representing trucking, it’s important we understand the issues facing every sector of the industry.

“When the opportunity to hold a Board of Management meeting in conjunction with the 15th anniversary reunion of the Road Transport Hall of Fame in Alice Springs came up, the Board decided it was a great opportunity to speak with the thousands of operators who attend.

“The Road Transport Hall of Fame is an iconic part of the Australian trucking industry and charts the massive impact the industry has on the development of outback Australia and Alice Springs.

Level Crossing Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Trucks News No Comments »

Australia — The Australian Trucking Association is calling on all trucking operators to use next week’s National Rail Safety Week to make sure their drivers are reminded of the importance of safety at level crossings.

ATA Chief Executive, Stuart St Clair, said operators should use National Rail Safety Week, which runs from 23 – 29 August, to talk to their drivers about safety around level crossings.

“On average there are 100 accidents at level crossings each year, which results in an average of 37 deaths. These accidents could easily be avoided if every road user, whether they are truck or car drivers, cyclists or pedestrians, give level crossings the respect they deserve,” Mr St Clair said.

“That’s why we are asking trucking operators to use this week to make sure all their drivers are aware of the rules when approaching level crossings.”

The ATA recommends that truck operators:

  • remind drivers of the importance of stopping at level crossings. Many accidents at level crossings occur because drivers have driven the route hundreds of times and relaxed their vigilance;
  • encourage drivers to ‘stop, look, listen and think’ when approaching level crossings that do not have active controls like flashing lights and boom gates; and
  • make sure drivers, when using private and farm crossings (which are often gated), do not park on the lines to open or close the gate.

Mr St Clair said National Rail Safety Week was the perfect opportunity for everyone involved in transport to commit to improving safety at level crossings.

“The ATA has been very proactive in encouraging level crossing safety. Last year, the House of Representative’s Standing Committee on Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government backed an ATA recommendation for further research into the use of cut-in radio warning technologies at level crossings,” Mr St Clair said.

Trucking Industry Welcomes Labor’s New South Wales Infrastructure Announcements

Trucks News No Comments »

Australia — The peak trucking industry bodies for Australia and New South Wales, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and ATA NSW, have welcomed the announcement by Labor that, if re-elected, they would begin planning for the M5 East widening and F3 to M2 upgrade.

The two projects would ease the congestion on some of Sydney’s busiest and most important roads and bring productivity gains to the state’s transport industry.

The Chief Executive of the ATA, Stuart St Clair, said the connection of the F3 to the M2 was a major missing link in the city’s road network.

“Pennant Hills Road is one of the biggest bottlenecks in the Sydney road network. This $150 million project would go a long way to easing the pressure on traffic travelling to and from the state’s north,” Mr St Clair said.

“The completion of the F3 to M2 upgrade would mean traffic would have easy access to the west, south and east of Sydney from North Sydney and country New South Wales.”

ATA NSW Manager, Jill Lewis, said M5 East widening project would be a massive boost to the state’s trucking industry.

ACI eManifest Roll-Out Delayed Again

Trucks News No Comments »

OTTAWA - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced that is again delaying the implementation of the ACI eManifest program for the highway mode, this time by one month from September 30th to October 31st, 2010. ACI eManifest was initially slated to roll out in June of this year, but was pushed to September to allow CBSA to ensure the integrity of the program given the volumes of data being transmitted by highway carriers. According to CBSA the reason for the most recent delay is related to the software of other commercial programs, not ACI.

According to Jason Proceviat, CBSA’s eManifest Director, “While ACI is ready to go, we bundle some commercial programs together, and there are a few delays from other areas that need to be addressed before we can go live.”

Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) CEO David Bradley said “the trucking industry understands the challenges involved in implementing such a complex program, but we are frustrated by the latest delay.” He said he hopes CBSA will meet the new implementation date. “Carriers are seeking improved efficiencies at the border,” he said. “This includes electronic transmission of data through ACI, and we are looking forward to implementation sooner rather than later. We want to avoid the stop-start pattern that characterized implementation of the ACE eManifest program in the US.”

Share the Road Heading to West Virginia Harley Owners Group Rally

Trucks News No Comments »

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Share the Road Highway Safety Program will be in West Virginia September 3-4, 2010 setting up a highway safety demonstration for over 1,500 Harley Owners Group members. Taking place in Charleston, W.V., Share the Road Professional Drivers are focusing on helping motorcycle enthusiasts stay safe on the highway at the Annual West Virginia state H.O.G. Rally.

This is the first rally held in Charleston and it will host Harley Davidson riders from 25 different states. The event, which is stationed on Kanawha River Boulevard, officially began with opening ceremonies on Wednesday evening at the State Capitol with guest of honor Gov. Joe Manchin. The rally runs through Saturday evening.

The Share the Road program has long focused on keeping all motorists on the highway safe and has spent a significant amount of time over the last five years visiting high schools throughout West Virginia. Share the Road has also developed special tips on motorcycle safety targeting how both motorcyclists and professional truck drivers can accommodate each other on the highway. By sharing tips with both groups, the highway safety program is working to curb the recent rise in motorcycle related fatalities.

“Attending the Harley Owners Group rally is a chance for us to talk about the techniques motorcyclists should know in order to stay safe around tractor-trailers,” said Barry Holland, a professional truck driver for UPS Freight. “Many riders don’t realize the limitations I face behind the wheel, so it is an enlightening experience. Similarly, I get to hear first-hand the concerns of motorcycle drivers and can help address those issues.”

Share the Road Professional Drivers Barry Holland, of Hurlock, Md., and Clarence Jenkins of Poca, W.Va., both from UPS Freight, will bring a combined 56 years and 4.8 million miles of accident-free driving experience to the event. These professional truck drivers provide a veteran’s perspective and can talk about the importance of safety.
